Bangladesh-Made Food Recognized Among the World’s Best Innovations

top-news

Bangladesh has made global headlines as TIME Magazine recognized MDCf-2 (Microbiota-Directed Complementary Food) among the world’s best innovations of 2025. Developed jointly by icddr,b and Washington University, MDCf-2 is a scientifically designed, affordable food supplement aimed at combating malnutrition among children. Unlike traditional nutrition supplements, MDCf-2 not only fills the stomach but also restores gut microbiota balance—helping children absorb nutrients more effectively and strengthening immunity.

Made entirely from local ingredients such as chickpea, soybean, peanut, and green banana powders, this innovation provides targeted nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria. The project, led by Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed of icddr,b and Dr. Jeffrey Gordon of Washington University, is being hailed as a breakthrough in the fight against global malnutrition.

Following successful trials in Bangladesh showing improved growth and immune response, the product is now being tested in India, Pakistan, Mali, and Tanzania. TIME listed MDCf-2 in its “Social Impact” category, emphasizing its potential to transform millions of malnourished children’s lives globally.
